Dr. Rui Li received the M.S. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2008 and 2013, respectively. Since 2013, he has been working as a research associate with University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. He is also a visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Australia. His research interests include HVDC transmission system, grid integration of renewable power, power electronic converters, and energy conversion. He has more than 50 publications in his technical field, including over 20 SCI papers.

【內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)介】

In recent years, modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have developed rapidly and are now the chosen technique for future high-voltage DC (HVDC) grids. However, they are vulnerable to DC faults, which result in rapid collapse of DC grid voltage and fast rise of DC fault current. The protection of large DC networks is a challenging task and is discussed in this presentation. Various fault protection schemes, including fault blocking converter configurations, active fault current control strategy and fast fault detection methods, are presented. The application of HVDC technique for offshore wind power transmission will also be discussed, considering fault conditions.
